Mozambique

The Quirimbas National Park, created by decree in 2002, is the first public area established by the initiative of a provincial authority under the auspices of the WWF in Maputo. It is situated in the Quirimbas Archipelago in the province of Cabo Delgado and occupies an area of 7,500km2 of marine and terrestrial ecosystems, islands, sea environment with coral reefs and more than 375 fish species, wildlife (great mammals, birds, and other species), culture (Ibo Island), Banco de São Lázaro with unique features. Mangroves, mountains, miombo and savannah forests.

Marine species include whales, dolphins, turtles, sharks, a wide range of exotic fish species, the rare and endangered dugong and 375 species of fish while the bird life is amazing. On land, elephants, buffaloes, black sables, elands, sable, wild dogs, lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, jackals and crocodiles may be seen.

Gorongosa National Park, is perhaps Africa’s greatest wildlife restoration story: a 20-year public-private partnership between the Government of Mozambique and the Gorongosa Restoration Project, a U.S. non-profit organization.

Every visitor who chooses Gorongosa as the destination for their Mozambique safari is directly supporting the important conservation work of the park, and providing jobs to local Mozambicans.

Gorongosa National Park (GNP), at the heart of Sofala Province, is located in the southernmost part of the Great Rift Valley of East Africa. The park includes the valley and parts of the surrounding midlands, and is equidistant between the cities of Chimoio and Beira.

Inhambane offers imposing buildings and endless crystal clear beaches where numerous water sports such as fishing, scuba diving, sand boarding, snorkeling and deep-sea fishing can be enjoyed.

The gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique's only underwater national park, Vilanculos town is compact and walkable.

A small and lively town, Vilanculos lies on the coast of Mozambique, some 750km from Maputo in the State of Inhambane with beach resorts, camping areas and hotels for every holidaymaker. The town is split into two sections, the old and the new, linked by an asphalt road of about 1km.

The Bazaruto Archipelago consists of five idyllic islands: Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Bangue.

The Archipelago is truly one of the most beautiful destinations on the African continent. The area is now protected as a conservation area and national park, including the coral reefs surrounding the islands, making it the only official marine reserve in the country.

The park is one of the largest in the Indian Ocean and a crucial achievement in global marine conservation. A nearly untouched paradise on earth, the archipelago has earned its reputation as the 'Pearl of the Indian Ocean'.

Ilha de Mozambique was the capital of Mozambique for nearly four centuries, under Portuguese colonization before the move to Lourenco Marques (now Maputo), and had been used as a major base for the Arab traders since around the 8th century, long before the arrival of the Portuguese.

It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The tiny island is only 3km long and very narrow. It's connected by a concrete bridge with the mainland and is said to be crowded by 16,000 inhabitants, most of them living in bustling Macuti Town.

Stone Town occupies the Northern half of the island and is much grander than Macuti town in the South, but both are UNESCO listed because of their significant architecture and cultural tradition.

Niassa Game Reserve in northern Mozambique comprises an area of 42,000 km2 and it contains, by far, the largest concentration of game in Mozambique. The magnificent scenery combined with the size and natural wealth makes Niassa Reserve one of Africa’s last great wildernesses.

Wildlife experts from the Niassa Reserve report about common sights of elephants with enormous and magnificent tusks, something that is more or less impossible to spot these days in other tourist parks thought Africa. The Reserve comprises woodland, open savannahs, seasonal wetlands and riverside forests along the Rovuma and Lugenda Rivers.

Other attractions in the Reserve are the spectacular inselbergs that are making the landscape a spectacular view. The highest of these rock formations is the Mecula Mountain (1441m) in the center of the Reserve.
